Warwick Valley High School has been designated by the New York State Education Department as a Recognition School for its high achieving and high progress for 2019-2020.

This year’s designees represent 13 percent of state public schools. This year marks the sixth time in the past seven years the high school has received this designation.

Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Recognition Schools are those that show high academic achievement and strong progress, and also perform acceptably in all subgroups for which they are accountable. Warwick Valley High School is one of 212 high schools to achieve this designation. In total, 582 schools were honored.

To achieve Recognition School status, the high school maintained its New York State Education Department accountability status of Good Standing. The school also achieved a Level 4 for Combined Composite Performance and Graduation Rate for high schools. Recognition Schools must also meet the following requirements:

Not receive a Level 1 rating (lowest) for any accountability indicator (English language arts and mathematics progress; chronic absenteeism; English language proficiency; college, career, and civic readiness for high schools).

Not have any subgroups identified as Potential Targeted Support and Improvement (PTSI), based on previous school year results.

Must have a 95 percent participation rate for ELA or Math.

“I am extremely proud of everyone at Warwick Valley High School for earning this recognition from the State Education Department,” said Superintendent Dr. David Leach. “To be designated a Recognition School is a reflection of the engaged leadership, teachers, staff, community, and student body who all share a dedication to continual academic achievement and personal growth. I extend my gratitude to Principal Marguerite Fusco and her staff for supporting this culture of excellence.”

Interim Commissioner Shannon Tahoe said that Recognition Schools across the state demonstrate a relentless commitment by teachers, administrators, staff, and parents. Each Recognition School will receive a certificate of recognition from the Commissioner.

“Congratulations to our staff and students and the entire school district team for the hard work that has gone into helping our school achieve this wonderful honor,” said Fusco. “Being designated among the top-ranking schools in the state further solidifies our high school’s reputation as a school of excellence and innovation. It is truly a reflection of everyone in the district and our community.”
