In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7, we asked local students to write us about their favorite teachers. You’ll find some of those letters in the print edition of the paper this week. We then then went out and interviewed those rock star educators. Here’s our teacher spotlight on Theresa Canfield.

What was one of your best days on the job?

I’ve had a multitude of great days. But, the best day ever had to be the time a former student showed up at my classroom door in his uniform. He was on leave and he came to visit me, his Kindergarten teacher!

What’s the secret to being a great teacher?

A great teacher instills the love of learning in all her students. Show your students how excited you are about learning and how much you really care about each and every one of them. They don’t always remember what you say, but they will remember how you make them feel.

What made you want to be a teacher?

Becoming a teacher was my ONLY career choice. As a kid, I remember playing school with my friends and I was ALWAYS the teacher. I knew at 5 years old that one day I was going to be a teacher

Tell us about the good and the bad of the past year.

It was a year like no other. Learning to use a new platform and a new delivery approach to teach 5 year olds remotely was extremely challenging. But, I did learn the importance of teamwork when challenged with remote learning. My parents, my students and my colleagues showed me how to be resilient. Their support and encouragement kept me going and I am extremely grateful.

What motivates you?

My students motivate me. Their excitement is contagious.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone considering becoming a teacher?

Be positive and encourage all your students to do their best. Remember, your students are the future.
