The Covid pandemic sparked a brief uptick in Warwick Fire Department volunteers, but the volunteer decline now continues, as some go off to school or change their lives in other ways, says Fire Chief Michael Contaxis.

“The Warwick community is comprised of all backgrounds and all, 16 years of age or older, are needed to serve as volunteer firefighters and fire police,” he said. “We need men and women. There’s no age discrimination. Volunteers who are 82 drive fire trucks. We’ve had someone 85 in fire police. Past chiefs have had 60 years of service.”

Some volunteers work in New York City during the day or for Orange County, he said. “We have teamsters and cops.”

With over 100 active members, volunteers have a variety of roles, according to their inclinations--whether firefighter, fire police, fundraiser or other. Search and rescue, water rescue, brush fire management and interior firefighting are the most highly trained roles and the most physically demanding. All roles are in need of volunteers, says Contaxis.

Basic training is 79 hours, covering ladder work, Hazmat, CPR and other specific skills. Another 50 hours of training is required for interior skills. All fire department members must be trained. No one can be just a “social member,” Contaxis said. Drills and meetings are scheduled monthly. New members have two years to complete their certifications to maintain membership.

Warwick has four fire stations, and a new one is being built.
