On Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court

President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court prompted the following reaction:

‘She will be a tremendous addition to the Supreme Court’

“Today is a great day for the United States and our Constitution. President Trump’s selection of Amy Coney Barrett marks a historical moment for our country as the first working mother to be named to the nation’s highest court. She is widely respected as a brilliant legal mind of unquestionable qualifications and caliber.

“In her introduction to America, she firmly and clearly stated her philosophy, born of her late mentor, the great Justice Antonin Scalia, that judges are not policymakers and must apply the law as written. As a loyal Constitutionalist, she will be a tremendous addition to the Supreme Court.”

    - Nick Langworthy, chairman of the New York Republican Committee

‘A direct threat to our health and rights’

“The fact that President Trump has nominated anyone to fill Justice Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat in this moment of national crisis is a direct threat to our health and rights and a disgrace to our democracy. Amy Coney Barrett’s record demonstrates that she will put at risk Justice Ginsburg’s long record of ensuring that everyone receives equal justice under the law.

“Here in New York, reproductive rights advocates and lawmakers always understood the threat to Roe is real. That’s why we proudly passed the Reproductive Health Act to ensure abortion care remains safe, legal and accessible in New York no matter what happens to Roe nationally. Threats to abortion access in many other parts of our country remain, and the Affordable Care Act, LGBTQ+ rights, voting rights, economic justice, and voting rights would be at risk nationwide.

“Instead of rushing the Supreme Court nomination process, the Senate should prioritize economic relief for New Yorkers, and all Americans who are suffering after having lost their jobs and are struggling to pay rent and feed their families.

“Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund stands in solidarity with our reproductive rights and justice partners to demand NO confirmation before the inauguration. It’s our future and we should get to choose our justice.”

    - Pascale Bernard, VP Community Organizing & Political Affairs for Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund

‘Our country’s judicial system will be in very capable hands’

“I am thrilled with President Trump’s nomination of Amy Coney Barrett following the death of legendary Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. My admiration of Judge Coney Barrett does not end with her impressive legal resume, but also extends to her incredible dedication as mother to her seven children.

“With someone as diligent and compassionate as Amy Coney Barrett as the latest addition to the United States Supreme Court, our country’s judicial system will be in very capable hands.”

    - Chele Farley, Republican and Conservative candidate for Congress in New York’s 18th district

Trump’s nomination represents ‘the continued politicization of our judiciary’

“President Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court represents the further degradation of our democracy and the continued politicization of our judiciary. Even if this process had been legitimate, Barrett’s anti-choice views, opposition to the Affordable Care Act, and hostility to immigrant rights and civil rights make her completely unfit to serve on the Supreme Court.

“I vehemently oppose Barrett’s nomination and will vote against her confirmation.”

    - U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
