'A sad day for the American people and our democracy'

It was with a heavy heart I was driving to my local Indivisible meeting this morning. The impeachment trial of our country’s president was taking place. From all that I had read and heard, it was anticipated that the Senate vote for witnesses to be called would be defeated.

This made me sad. I was thinking of the words of U.S.House manager Adam Schiff’s repeated acknowledgements that a trial with no witnesses is a sham; an attempt to cover up the truth, unprecedented.

Our local radio station, WTBQ, was playing in my car as I drove. I was heartened to hear the morning Roundtable moderator discussing issues related to the trial, including the words of Adam Schiff and proposing there should be witnesses at this very consequential trial.

Recent polls indicated that a clear majority of Americans felt the same way. By the end of the day, the vote in the Senate fell short of a majority that would have allowed for witnesses to be called.

This marked a sad day for the American people and our democracy itself!

Because of this defeat, we must all be courageously committed to free and fair elections, work on voter registration, stay informed and not take our democracy for granted.
