(AP) Grants are being offered by New York state for dam-removal projects in the Hudson River estuary watershed to restore habitat connectivity for American eel and river herring. The state Department of Environmental Conservation says $986,000 in grants is available for communities in the region. The minimum grant award is $10,500. In addition to helping migratory eels and herring, the grants are intended to help communities reduce flooding risks by removing constrictions along river tributaries. The Hudson River Estuary Grants Program has awarded 528 grants totaling more than $22 million over the past 17 years.
