It is with extreme sadness we announce the passing of Don Roe, 74, of Cocoa Beach, Florida, formerly of Warwick, New York, who went to be with his eternal family in heaven on January 1, 2022. Don was born on February 23, 1947 in Queens, New York, to the proud parents Richard Roe and Cecilia Dolega Roe. Don went to school in Floral Park, New York and moved to New York City during the 1960s, where he developed his passion for life and love of music.

When it was a time for another view of life, he moved to upstate New York and became an officer of the New York State Correction system. He worked his way up to captain and retired in 1996. However, it was here in Warwick, New York, where he met and married Mary Dering on February 14, 1989. Mary and Don enjoyed many years together traveling extensively. Whether it was skiing in Vermont or cruising down the Nile River, they relished their time together. Don is survived by his wife, Mary, of Cocoa Beach; his stepson Kenneth Dering and his wife Jennifer and their children Alex and Zachary; his sisters Susan Lalonde of Ogdensburg, NY; Gloria Knowlton (who he always affectionately called Glorious), of Goshen, NY; and his beloved feline companion, Melody. Don was predeceased by his parents and two brothers Richard Roe and Robert Roe.

Don was an avid reader, music enthusiast and an animal lover. Don was a gentle soul. He was the kind of person who would go out of his way to help out a neighbor or bring food to someone in need. Even during his last days in the hospital he was kind and thankful to the staff who provided his care. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Florida, for their care and kindness that they bestowed on our husband, brother and friend.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Island Cremations and Funeral Service, Merritt Island, Florida. Don will be laid to rest next to his brothers in Gouverneur, New York, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local animal shelter or in remembrance of Don’s heart of gold, perform an act of kindness for a friend or stranger.
