By the numbers. Orange County’s unemployment rate at 5.3 percent in July 2021

The New York State Department of Labor this week released preliminary local area unemployment rates for July 2021. Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 7.7% in June to 7.6% in July 2021.

Last month, Orange County had an unemployment rate of 5.3%; in July 2020, the rate was 12.4%

The labor department indicated there were 174,800 Orange County residents with jobs last month; in July 2020, 166,200 held jobs. The July 2021 figures represent an 8.5% increase in the number of employed county residents.

Finally, the labor department found that there were 9,800 unemployed people in the county in July 2021, which is down 13.7% from the 23,500 people out of work in July 2020.
