Second annual Warwick Mardi Gras for a cause raises close to $6,000

WARWICK — Once again, Warwick's second annual Mardi Gras for a Cause exceeded expectations.

On Tuesday evening, March 4, the night before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, the Village of Warwick played host to its second annual Mardi Gras for a Cause.

For the most part, and with some exceptions, the lavish costumes and parades traditionally seen in New Orleans on Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday," were not part of this year's Warwick event. But nevertheless, about 300 participants enjoyed the local celebration, which raised close to $6,000 and still counting for BackPack Snack Attack.

The participating restaurants were busy from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Village Billiards was packed from 10 p.m. to midnight. And owner Adam Powers and his staff at Fetch served breakfast to a full house from midnight to 2 a.m. The musicians donated their time and talent.

Last year Mardi Gras for a Cause was an idea that originated with a group of local musicians from Warwick who wanted to be able to celebrate the arts and the community.

The three major goals of the Mardi Gras for a Cause Committee were to organize a unique event that all community members could enjoy, showcase local businesses and musicians and raise awareness and money for an important cause that directly affects the community.

A year ago the turnout for the event also surpassed all expectations and raised a similar amount. And in 2014, like that event, many of the same participating restaurants hosted musicians who performed free of charge.

A percentage of earnings from the sale of food and beverages along with proceeds from a raffle were earmarked for BackPack Snack Attack.
