Museum Village has reschuled its winter exhibit and farmers' market to Jan. 27

Photo illustration A special winter exhibit will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, in the Museum Village Visitors Center with a display of butter churns with a variety of designs reflecting the innovation of the Victorian era.

MONROE — Due to the approaching inclement weather approaching, Museum Village has rescheduled its winter exhibit and farmers market from this Sunday, Jan. 20, to next Sunday, Jan. 27, from noon to 4 p.m.

The special winter exhibit will be held in the Museum Village Visitors Center with a display of butter churns with a variety of designs reflecting the innovation of the Victorian era.

Butter production was a major industry in Orange County throughout the second half of the 19th century. Much of this was shipped to New York City, but the railroads broadened the market - bringing butter as far away as California.

There will be a cooking demonstration using 19th century recipes. It’s been said that while your grandmother made pie crust with lard, your great-grandmother used butter. The ubiquitous ingredient of the 19th century kitchen, butter was sometimes used in surprising ways, including as a salad dressing.

There will be ongoing cooking demonstrations on the open hearth, completing different sweet and savory dishes throughout the day.

There also will be a farmers' market from noon to 4 p.m. featuring the following vendors:

• Do Re Me Farms - fresh produce such as mushrooms and various fruits.

• Our Fathers Farm - alpaca fiber farm, selling knitted goods and yarn.

• Hudson Valley Pantry - jams, jellies and salsa.

• Petropoulos Family Groves - olive oil, soap, vinegar and lip balms.

Museum Village is located at 1010 State Route 17M in Monroe.
