Substitute teacher donates ball signed by 1955 World Series champs to Warwick Valley
Warwick-Brooklyn native and beloved substitute teacher Yale Ekus has donated a baseball signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers 1955 World Series championship team, including players Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, to Warwark Valley Central School District’s athletic department.
Mr. Ekus’ father, a Brooklyn haberdasher who dressed many of the Dodgers in the 1950s, received the signed ball as a gift from the team. Mr. Ekus has had the baseball since his dad gave it to him. He gifted the ball to the athletic department, he said, because he wanted to share it with the school community.
Athletic Director Gregory Sirico said the baseball will be displayed in the high school as soon as a proper location is determined.
Mr. Ekus, 91, continues to substitute teach at Warwick Valley High School.
