Security at Applefest top priority for local police

WARWICK — It's behind the scenes but when 30,000 visitors are expected to come to Warwick for Applefest, Warwick Police Chief Thomas McGovern, his officers and all other local police agencies must prepare for any contingency, however remote.

And on Sunday, Oct. 4, that included bomb-sniffing dogs courtesy of the Metropolitan Transit Authority police.

Fortunately, the dogs had an uneventful day but they and their handlers, along with a Warwick Police Department K-9 team, were on hand to make sure of that.

"The Warwick Police Department," said McGovern, "would like to thank the Metropolitan Transit Authority police for providing us with canine officers, the Village of Florida police for their assistance, the New York State Police for their assistance and the Greenwood Lake Police for keeping traffic flowing. Keeping all the vendors, participants, residents and visitors safe is a complicated procedure."
