— Since 2000, The Warwick Summer Arts Festival, founded by Elizabeth Reese, has been one of Orange County’s premiere arts festivals featuring music, theater, dance, exhibits, films and readings in locations around the Town of Warwick.

This year, aligning with the elements of the iconic public street celebrations known as carnivals or fairs, The Warwick Summer Arts Festival (WSAF) is scheduled to run from July 15-23.

The popular festival will bring attention to the arts with public performances and exhibitions reminiscent of a traveling carnival.

Musicians and dancers will perform in unassuming venues such as local farms and fields. Artwork, employing a combination of mediums, will be exhibited at local businesses and throughout the Village of Warwick.

Art on parade

The festival will open with an art parade in Warwick on Friday evening, July 15, featuring live music, dancers and large-scale processional art pieces in celebration of the community’s arts.

Keeping with the carnival tradition of celebrating ones community, WSAF will collaborate with many local businesses and organizations including Pennings Farm Market, The Seligmann Center, Scheuermann Farms, Wickham Works, the Warwick Community Center and the Warwick Drive-In.

Collaborators

Many of these collaborators will assist by representing artists of all types by offering space within their businesses to exhibit works of art or presenting the farmland and parks for musical, dance and literary performances throughout the festival.

On the schedule for this year are acts including indie country performers, the Defibulators, on Friday, July 15, at the Warwick Community Center.

Described alternately as “Hee-Haw on mescaline” and “Carter Family-meets-Ramones,” The Defibulators unique brand of country has made them pioneers in the Brooklyn country music scene.

The Irish American folk rock artists, Emish, will perform the next day, Saturday, July 16, at Wickham Woodlands with Darrah Carr Dance and Tara O’Grady and her Black Velvet Band.

Aerialist Robin Lynch will perform aerial acrobatics at Scheuermann Farms outdoor venue on the next Saturday, July 23. A schedule of additional performances and exhibits can be found on the WSAF Website.

Essential information

This year’s event is co-directed by Melissa Padham-Maass and Marcela Bumpus.

The Warwick Summer Arts Festival is made possible, in part, with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts. This project is also made possible by many local sponsors.
