WARWICK — On Sunday evening, Dec. 13, 100 members of the Warwick Valley Chorale, the longest-running community chorus in Orange County, performed for a full house at the Church of St. Stephen, the First Martyr.

The performance was the third in a series this December for the organization's 75th holiday season.

All of the holiday concerts, including two previous performances at Grace Episcopal Church in Middletown and the Goshen United Methodist Church, featured three contemporary Christmas cantatas: "A Day for Dancing" by Lloyd Pfautsch, "Hodie" by John Leavitt and the world premiere of a new piece, "Alpha and Omega," by composer Gwyneth Walker.

The performance also included the seasonal favorite, the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah."

All three concerts were free, although any contributions were appreciated.

The Warwick Valley Chorale began as the Warwick Summer Chorale on June 18, 1940, organized and directed by Kate Fowler Chase, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Federation of Music Clubs.

The first concert, with 16 women participating, was held on Nov. 28, 1941.

Today the chorale, a volunteer organization of 100 voices, regularly performs in communities throughout Orange County.

The chorale has also frequently performed at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Free-admission concerts are presented each May and December in Warwick and neighboring communities. The programs are under the direction of Stanley Curtis with accompanist, Gail Johnson.
